What I do
Imagine a battlefield. On one side, the colonizers: microbial pathogens armed with a vast array of weapons that can seek and destroy targets, provide stealth, and shield themselves from harm. On the other, the fierce defenders: an army of formidable cell soldiers, highly organized and well-trained to protect with their lives the unique territory that is your body. What happens at first encounter? How do they communicate? What are the factors that decide which side wins in combat, and how can we safely intervene to keep pathogens at bay? As an infection biologist, these are the questions I ask and strive to find answers to.
