What I do

Imagine a battlefield. On one side, the colonizers: microbial pathogens armed with a vast array of weapons that can seek and destroy targets, provide stealth, and shield themselves from harm. On the other, the fierce defenders: an army of formidable cell soldiers, highly organized and well-trained to protect with their lives the unique territory that is your body. What happens at first encounter? How do they communicate? What are the factors that decide which side wins in combat, and how can we safely intervene to keep pathogens at bay? As an infection biologist, these are the questions I ask and strive to find answers to.

Art

If curiosity led me to science, creativity compels me to make art. There are far too many wondrous things in existence that it's impossible to resist reimagining them elsewhere. And so with this creativity and imagination, I tell stories, explain ideas, and connect with others.

Science

Science is the opposite of Fake News. I have a doctorate in microbiology and specialize in infection biology. Infections are among the leading causes of death worldwide, so I am glad I can contribute to finding cures and improving people's quality of life.
